Because I don’t already have more writing projects than I can finish in any sane span of time. Because I need to know that I will never ever lack something interesting to distract me from what I really need to be doing at the moment. Because I don’t have enough distractions already.
But this is different — nonfiction instead of fiction. Something that will be useful as well as entertaining. To be titled (tentatively) Learning Sideways: a Writer’s Journey. To cut the awful suspense short, it will be a collection of posts from this blog. No, not a blog dump. I’m not that egotistical or stupid. A lot of what’s on this blog is ephemera — written, skimmed, and forgotten. But judging by the comments, some of it has been helpful to other writers who, like me, are just setting out on the road to authordom.
Some posts have only a paragraph or a few lines that are worth keeping, and others are okay but could stand to be edited and maybe expanded. My tags tell me that I tend to write a lot about a few themes, so that gives me a good basis for developing chapters or sections. What I want to emphasize is the learning process, especially when it violates all the expert advice and rules about writing. That means talking about failures, dead ends, and the stop and go process of learning to write.
It’s going to be a low-priority project that I work on a bit at a time because I don’t want it to get in the way of getting novels finished and published. Possible date? Maybe some time next year.
