The same rule that applies to writing applies to creating a book cover. Don’t keep fiddling with something that’s never going to work.
Part of the drama is my frustration over the last couple of days, trying one thing, then another, but mostly trying to find an image that would work without having to call on photo manipulation talents that I don’t have. It took going through page after page on Wikimedia Commons until I’d skimmed over about 500 images. I found the right image, but it wasn’t the right look. It took going way off into the unexpected to get what a cover that would catch the eye and say what I wanted it to say.
The rest of the drama is the cover itself–absolutely unlike any of the ideas I’d tossed around for months.
